March 5, 2012 - The SECHC will send its first-ever all star team to compete in the DIII ACHA National All-Star weekend March 30 - April 1 in Philadelphia, PA. Joining 19 other SEC players will be 4 Ice Dogs standouts: Peter Kacer, Vince DiCarlo, Ryan Terrana, and Cam Navis.
DiCarlo is returning for his second visit to the all-star weekend having played on the all-South team in 2010 where he shined in the two games he played, including the tournament's championship game.
The SEC all-star team will compete against 9 other regional all-star teams from around the country for top regional bragging rights.
The all-star weekend also serves as a tryout for the 2012 ACHA DIII National Team that will travel to Europe for a series of games this December. Best of luck to all of the Ice Dogs, and congratulations!
February 25, 2012 - Mere seconds after tying the game at 3 late in the third period of the SECHC semi-final game with the Florida Gators, a costly defensive zone turnover led to a Gator goal that sends Florida to the championship game.
Trialing 3-2 with just over a minute remaining in the game, the Dogs pulled goaltender Vince DiCarlo in favor of an extra attacker, and with just :44 seconds remaining in the game Cam Navis scored to tie the game.
Seconds later off of the ensuing face off, Florida's Michael Jugan picked up an errant puck in the Georgia defensive zone and slipped it into the Georgia nets to put the Gators up for good.
Also scoring for the Dogs were Kyle Blankenship and Peter Kacer. It was a disappointing loss for the Dogs who seemed to have the momentum in the later stages of the game, but a solid tournament performance for Georgia overall.
February 24, 2012 - In an exciting game that went down to the wire, the Georgia Ice Dogs vested revenge on the Ole Miss Rebels by defeating the #2 seed Mississippi 2-1 in the SEC Hockey playoffs quarter-final.
The Dogs came ready to play in this Friday night battle, seeking to upset a Rebels team who defeated the Dogs just 4 weeks prior in Duluth, GA.
Georgia looked strong in the first period, and came close to opening the scoring on several occasions hitting posts or just missing on quality scoring opportunities.
Goaltender Vince DiCarlo came up with big saves on a breakaway and a 2-on-1 to keep Ole Miss off the board.
Georgia struck first on a Navis to Kacer power play goal in the second period to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Mississippi's Miles Flott tied the score at 1-1 on a Rebels power play goal of their own.
The third period remained deadlocked at one as both teams played a hard checking brand of hockey. Freshman Rick Fiorillo returning to action for the first time since he suffered a broken arm on January 17 notched a goal late in the third period on the Dogs second power-play goal of the night to put Georgia up 2-1.
Georgia staved off a late Ole Miss rally as they pulled their goaltender in attempts to tie the game. The win advanced Georgia to the SECHC semi-final showdown with the Florida Gators. Vince DiCarlo received player of the game award for his stellar net-minding for Georgia.
February 25, 2012 - Two Georgia players were honored as members of the All-SECHC teams in a ceremony that took place between semi-final games at the SEC Hockey playoffs Saturday night in Huntsville, AL.
Peter Kacer was honored as the 2012 Most Valuable Player of the SECHC, as well as a member of the 1st Team All-SEC squad.
Defenseman Ryan Terrana was named to the 2nd All-SECHC team as one of the top defensemen in the conference. Congratulations to both of these Ice Dogs!
Boasting top academic honors in the ACHA, six Georgia Ice Dogs were awarded national All-Academic accolades. February 7, 2012 - Florida (7-3-0, 14 PTS) will be taking the No. 1 seed out of the east heading into the SEC Tournament.
Georgia (5-4-0, 10 PTS) and Vanderbilt’s (4-5-0, 8 PTS) game this weekend will decide the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds currently open In the SEC East.
South Carolina (4-6-0, 8 PTS) is locked into the No. 4 seed as the Gamecocks would lose a tiebreaker (#1 – Head-to-Head Victories) if Vanderbilt loses to Georgia this weekend.
Georgia defeated Vanderbilt 6-5 in the first meeting this season. If Georgia wins, the Ice Dogs will take the No. 2 seed.
Georgia can also back into the No. 2 seed if they fall in a shootout to the Commodores, as the shootout loss will give Georgia one point, for 11 total points. Vandy’s will can only bring 10 points.
If Vanderbilt wins in regulation or overtime, the Commodores will take the No. 2 seed. Vanderbilt and Georgia would end the season with 5-5 records and a season split. The head-to-head split would cause tiebreaker two (divisional wins) to issue the top seed. Vanderbilt and Georgia each have four divisional wins heading into the final week. A Vanderbilt win would give the Commodores five wins in division and secure the No. 2 seed.
February 4, 2012 - Following sixty minutes of action packed and exhausting play in front of an overflow crowd at The ICE in Cumming, GA, in a rivalry game that encountered seven equalizing or lead changing goals, the Yellowjackets from Ga. Tech slid home an empty-net goal with :07 seconds remaining to seal a 6-4 win over a depleted Georgia team.
"This was one of the best battles on the ice between these two teams in the past decade," Georgia coach John Hoos commented. "The fans were great and their enthusiasm was energizing for the players, and every ounce of effort was left out on that ice tonight by our guys."
In a game that was "senior night" for both teams, two graduating seniors for Georgia and one for Tech were honored before the game. Captain Matt McClure and goaltender and alternate captain Paul Connors were visible leaders throughout the contest. Even after sustaining a shoulder injury that sidelined him for much of the game, McClure remained on the bench to rally his teammates. Connors got the nod to start in the nets against Tech for the first time in his three year career - an honor he earned through vast improvement from hard work according to coach Hoos.
Although faced with a shortened bench from injuries, the Bulldogs came out leading the play and controlling the game physically. An early debatable elbowing penalty on the 6'5" Jared Reeves slowed the Dawgs momentum, but stellar goaltendeing from Connors and swarming defense around the UGA goal kept the Jackets off the board, and several closely missed opportunities offensively for Georgia kept the first period scoreless.
The Jackets struck first in the second period just three minutes in on a low shot from Tech's McCrary. Four minutes later Tech's Galli put GT up 2-0 after UGA's Terrana was stripped of the puck in front of the Georgia goal crease. The Dawgs were not to be denied, and Terrana would make up for his rare misplay with the puck. However it was Georgia's Cam Navis with a rifle shot to the upper left corner on the power-play that cut the lead to 2-1.
Two minutes later it was Terrana's turn, ripping home a slap-shot from the top of the circles on a Georgia 5-on-3 power play to even the score. The Dawgs then took the lead as Peter Kacer snapped home the third power play goal of the period lifting Georgia to a 3-2. With just :52 seconds remaining in the second period the Jackets knotted the score at 3 on McCrary's second tally of the game on a point blank shot after beating the Georgia defender in front of Connors.
The third period unfolded in Georgia's favor at first. After exchanging opportunities at both ends, including some dramatic saves by Layer in the Tech goal on several Georgia power play attempts, Ryan Terrana joined the offensive attack and finished a tic-tac-toe play from Navis and Kacer to put Georgia up once again at 4-3.
Unfortunately the lead only lasted until 5:26 remaining when Gali punched home a rebound goal to tie the game. After stymieing another Georgia opportunity, Tech regained the lead with 3:56 left in the game on shot from Tech's Roberts.
The Dawgs tried to rally in the remaining minutes, including pulling Connors in favor of an extra attacker with a minute to go, but the Jackets repelled Georgia's attacks and a lengthy shot found it's way into the empty Georgia net making the final 6-4.
Georgia continues on with SEC play next weekend when they travel to Nashville on Saturday, Feb. 11 to take on Vanderbilt in a game that will decide 2nd place in the SECHC East division. Georgia has already qualified for the SEC hockey tournament in Huntsville, AL Feb. 24-26.
January 16, 2012 - The Ice Dogs started off the 2012 Savannah Tire Hockey Classic with a big conference win over the University of Florida in an overtime thriller.
Georgia’s Peter Kacer scored four times, including the winning goal, and assisted on another in the Ice Dogs’ 5-4 upset in overtime of the ACHA DIII South Region’s No. 7-ranked team, in the 14th Annual Savannah Tire Hockey Classic.
Florida had erased a 4-1 deficit in the last four minutes of the third period, notching the equalizer with just 20 seconds left, to force the overtime period.
Kacer, the Ice Dogs’ leading scorer, nailed the game winner with two minutes remaining in the extra session. The win sets up Saturday night’s Georgia-Georgia Tech meeting as the tournament’s championship game.
The victory moved Georgia to within a game of .500 for the season, at 7-8-1 and two points of Florida in the SEC East standings.
A sellout crowd of 5,600-plus watched Friday night’s two games.
On Saturday night, in what turned out to be the defacto championship game of the classic after Georgia Tech beat Florida State in the other match Friday night, the Ice Dogs came up short, falling to the rival Yellow Jackets 9-5.
The 2012 championship is Georgia Tech’s seventh. Georgia has won five titles.
Peter Kacer scored three goals for Georgia in a scoring contest for the record crowd of approximately 5,600 in the Savannah Civic Center arena.
January 13, 2012 - When the Georgia Ice Dogs took the ice for practice following the South Carolina vs Citadel game on Thursday night in the Savannah Civic Center, they found pucks and skates sticking onto paint.
"We found out that they just tried to build up the ice from the public skating they held over the holidays," Georgia assistant coach Steve Beneke explained. "It didn't work very well."
The ice level wasn't built up on top of the white base paint nor to sufficiently cover the lines painted on the ice for hockey, and following the ice was resurfaced following the first game of the Hockey Classic the paint was exposed.
"They shaved too much ice off, and didn't flood like they should have to build up the ice level," assistant coach Chris Copelli remarked.
Copelli worked at the Atlanta IceForum while attending UGA, and coach Beneke previously worked for the NHL's Anaheim Ducks.
Head Coach John Hoos praised Beneke and Copelli after seeing the ice conditions for their practice.
"We had to essentially keep our practice in the middle of the ice because there was no ice in the corners or behind the goal lines."
And civic center staff was nowhere to be found, but that didn't stop the Georgia coaches from taking charge.
"There is no doubt in my mind that if it wasn't for Steve and Chris hockey could not have been played on Friday."
The Georgia coaches found hoses and buckets and proceeded to flood the end zones of the ice and pack snow and slush around the boards where 3-4 inch gaps exposed the concrete floor.
"They were at the arena until 5 a.m. working on that ice. They deserve a ton of credit. Pretty amazing."
Beneke and Copelli advised the civic center staff when they arrived Friday morning how to properly flood the ice to build upon the work they did overnight, and by the Friday night games hockey was played and the Hockey Classic went on without a glitch without most of the 11,000 fans and other teams knowing that the tournament was saved by a couple of coaches in Red & Black .
January 11, 2012 - The Georgia Ice Dogs will be hosting their first Youth Hockey Night at the IceForum in Duluth, GA at their game vs. Ole Miss on Saturday, January 28.

All youth hockey players who come to the game in their team youth hockey jersey get free admission to the game when accompanied by a paid adult.
Door prizes, raffles, and an autograph session with players will be a part of this event.
January 10, 2012 - The Savannah Hockey Classic is an annual event that is unique and special college hockey invitational tournament hosted by the Savannah Civic Center.
This year's event takes place on January 13 and 14 in the Savannah Civic Center, and another weekend of large crowds are expected as teams from Georgia, Florida, Florida State and Georgia Tech face off for a chance to raise the coveted Thrasher Cup.
This will be the 14th hockey classic in Savannah that has been dubbed the "Rumble in the Rink", and often called "the Beanpot of the South".
Fanfare, top-bill media coverage, on-ice spotlight introductions, and player autograph sessions are just some of the things that make this event special. Crowds of 5,000+ make it a lifetime memorable set of games for players and fans alike.

November 12, 2011 - Peter Kacer netted five goals as the Georgia Ice Dogs dismantled the Tennessee Volunteers 8-2 on Friday night at the IceForum in Duluth, GA after returning home following a three game road trip.
Georgia special teams shined as the Dawgs tallied two power play goals and two short handed goals and turned away 6 of 7 Tennessee power play chances. The win improved the Dogs record to to 3-1-0 and second place in the SECHC east division, 4-6-1 overall.
Cam Navis got the Dogs on the board at 12:33 in the first period as the Ice Dogs capitalized on their first of ten power play opportunities and did not look back. Two minutes later Peter Kacer scored his first of five goals on a short-handed breakaway. Kyle Blankenship scored on Georgia’s next power play opportunity with 7:50 remaining in the opening period on a feed from Rick Fiorillo third goal in the first period.
The Dogs took a 3-0 lead into the second period and would never trail in the game. Kacer scored just 30 seconds in the period putting Georgia up 4-0. Ice Dogs goaltender Vince DiCarlo kept the Vols off the board until the 5:57 mark of the second period when Brian Schroder scored on the power play for Tennessee. Just 13 seconds later Georgia regained their 4 goal lead when Kacer deposited a backhand shot into the upper right corner of the UT goal.
With a four goal deficit Tennessee frustrations grew late in the second period and it was visible in their play on the ice. With just over two minutes remaining in the period Tennessee’s Kris Debenedicts charged and checked Georgia netminder DiCarlo as he played a loose puck deep in the UGA zone. Debenedicts was ejected from the game for the malicious hit, but not before DiCarlo skated after him to repay the favor.
Both teams wound up with 4 players in their respective penalty boxes once order was restored. The Vols accrued 17 minutes in penalties in the second period alone. Georgia’s Ryan Terrana received a tem-minute misconduct for taunting the Vols fans in the stands following the incident.
The Dogs scored another short-handed goal when Navis tallied his second of the night putting Georgia up 6-1. Tennessee cut the lead to 6-2 when their leading scorer Jeong Choe beat a screened DiCarlo for his only goal of the game.
The third period consisted of DiCarlo keeping the Vols off the scoreboard with a variety of pad and glove saves. Kacer’s goal three minutes into the third period deflated the Vols for much the third period, and the Dawgs penalty kill was able to turn away three Tennessee power plays in the final period as the Atlanta based officiating crew once again displayed favor to a trailing visiting team.
Kacer added his 5th goal with 6:20 left in the game placing an exclamation point on the win with a final score of 8-2. DiCarlo stopped 27 of 29 shots faced in one of his best performances of the season.
Fresh off their SEC conference victory, the Ice Dogs travel to Columbus, GA on November 18 and 19 to take on archrival Georgia Tech on Friday night and Auburn on Saturday night.
October 25, 2011 - The Georgia-Florida rivalry has always evoked emotions for Bulldog and Gator fans, and for many the rivalry culminates with the football classic that has taken place in each year since 1933 in Jacksonville, FL on the gridiron. For the past 14 years fans have been treated to a rivalry not quite as old but every bit as heated despite being played on ice - the Georgia-Florida hockey classic on Friday night prior to the football showdown. This Friday at the Jacksonville Ice and Sportsplex marks the 15th year that the hockey teams from Georgia and Florida will face-off in Jacksonville during the football rivalry weekend, and with SEC Hockey conference and national ranking implications on the line much like the football game, this battle on the ice is sure to be hard hitting and high flying.
October 11, 2011 - The South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference named Peter Kacer this week’s SECHC Player of the Week recipient after an outstanding performance in the Georgia Ice Dogs game at Tennessee and on the road at Louisville.
In the game against the Ice Vols, Kacer, a sophomore forward from Atlanta, Ga., scored a natural hat trick to help spark the Ice Dogs come from behind, 6-5 victory over Tennessee. Kacer also had an assist in the game against the Ice Vols.
The 4-point performance sparked a rally that gave the Ice Dogs n important conference opening win.
On Saturday, Kacer was apart of all three Ice Dogs goals as he scored two goals and had an assist in a 5-3 loss to the Division II Ice Cards.
As a freshman last season, Kacer was second on the Ice Dogs with 2o points, while on playing in 10 games during the second semester. Kacer scored 14 goals and had 6 assists. Three goals came on the power play, while Kacer also had a short-handed tally and only four penalty minutes.
Notable Nominees
Clay Link (Alabama) 5 goals and 3 assists in two wins over Miss St.Forrest Mudgett (Arkansas) 2 goals and 5 assists in two wins over Auburn.
Kevin Sheer and Nick Jabs (Arkansas) combined for 46 saves and two shutouts in wins over Auburn.
Hayden Lancaster (South Carolina) 2 goals and 2 assists in win over Appalachian State.
Cody Fullinwider (Ole Miss) 4 goals and an assist in two wins over Tulane.
October 9, 2011 - The Georgia Ice Dogs skated into Knoxville without four of their starters this weekend, and escaped Friday night with a hard fought 6-5 win over the Ice Vols of Tennessee.
Peter Kacer netted a natural hat-trick with three consecutive goals in the second period as Georgia tallied off 5 unanswered goals after going down 3-1.
Junior transfer Kyle Blankenship added two goals and defensive leader Ryan Terrana had the eventual game winning highlight reel goal midway thru the third period. Vince DiCarlo was outstanding in the Georgia net stopping 28 of 33 Tennessee shots, many right on the doorstep of the Dawgs goal crease.
Georgia traveled to Louisville, KY to take on the D2 Cardinals on Saturday evening. The Dawgs outplayed the deeper benched Cardinals for most of the game, out-shooting Louisville 46-31 on the night. The first five minutes of the third period netted two goals for Louisville that ended up the difference of the game. Cardinals goaltender Kyle Burdoff was stellar in the Louisville nets turning away 43 of the Dawgs 46 shots and stymieing several Georgia power play opportunities and odd-man rushes. Senior Paul Connors made several big saves for UGA as he kept the Dawgs in the game turning away several flurries in front of Georgia net. Kacer added two more goals Saturday night, while freshman Rick Fiorillo scored a beautiful backhand goal to start the third period rally for Georgia.
"It was an incredible effort from our players this weekend - a team effort that was worthy of two wins," head coach John Hoos commented about the weekend. "We just came up against a hot goaltender at Louisville and couldn't capitalize on the opportunities we generated. A few bad bounces and a questionable goal call didn't help, but those are things we can't control." In the third period against Louisville a rebound shot bounced over Connors and was cleared by Terrana apparently before it entered the Georgia goal, but was signaled as a goal by the referee. "It definitely didn't go in," commented a visibly frustrated Terrana after the game.
Despite the bad breaks in Louisville, there was an aura of positive energy following the weekend. "A loss is never an acceptable outcome, but we really came together as a group and discovered what we are capable of. We had some guys really step up and some guys really logged some playing minutes. It was good to see the team rallying around each other, and some guys finding their game and others contributing in important roles and making an impact. We take what we did this weekend, improve in areas and move forward focusing on our next weekend's games."
Georgia will take on Georgia State on Friday night after a schedule change from originally scheduled Appalachian State, and another SEC battle with much improved Vanderbilt on Saturday night at the IceForum.
October 4, 2011 - The Georgia Ice Dogs will play two games this weekend during their road trip north. Hoping to recover from a disheartening 6-2 loss on home ice, they will first face the Tennessee Ice Vols in a conference match up on Friday the 7th. On Saturday the 8th, they will take on the Louisville Ice Cards.
The Dogs aim to freeze the Vols , who are coming off of an exciting win last weekend against Roanoke. Jeong Choe scored a hat trick in that game, earning him the SECHC player of the week award.
Last year the two teams split the series, with Tennessee taking the game in early October, 6-5. Georgia bounced back in early February, defeating the Ice Vols at home, 7-3. Overall, Georgia has a slight edge in the series with the Vols, with 17 wins, 14 losses, and 3 ties.
When Georgia heads to Louisville, they should have an advantage on the ice, but will also be facing a team looking for a win. So far the Cardinals are 0-4, dropping two to Ole Miss earlier this year, before losing to Dennison last week.
The last time the two teams met was in 2004, and the Dogs claimed a decisive victory. The final score was 13-1.
October 2, 2011 - The Georgia Ice Dogs fell behind quickly in Friday’s season opener in Duluth, GA opening the door for the Kennesaw State Owls to take home a decisive victory on the road.
With two goals in the first three minutes, KSU effectively took control and didn’t look back. With several players from last year's Division 2 team playing on the Division 3 team this year, the Owl's looked fast and sharp.
Barron Sluder ignited the Owls offense a minute and a half into the first period with a five-hole goal. Less than a minute later, Taylor Gibson followed beat Vince DiCarlo’s rising blocker to go up by two.
The lead grew once more in the first period when Daniel Tari was fed a quick pass in the slot and deposited a snap shot past DiCarlo in the Georgia nets.
Peter Kacer said “We waited too long to move it up on the breakout. We weren't prepared. That’s what it comes down to. We weren’t prepared for this game.”
Throughout the first period, Georgia struggled to get the puck out of its own zone.
Georgia picked up their play in the second and third period, but was shut down on several prime scoring opportunities. The Ice Dogs also hit the post three times.
DiCarlo made some excellent saves fighting to keep his team in the game.
The Dogs broke onto the scoreboard with a power-play goal from Brian Nahodyl assisted by teammate Jared Reeves at 14:31 of the second when Nahodyl stuffed the puck into the net.
Kennesaw replied minutes later with a breakaway goal by winger Ian Klip. The Owls scored again when Will Galucki capitalized on some confusion in DiCarlo’s crease, poking in a puck that appeared to be frozen.
“This is their first year in this division,” said Kacer. “They had something to prove. They proved it.”
The third period grew increasingly chippy as both sides struggled to gain the upper hand. At times intensity turned into lack of discipline. The game ended with a total of 70 penalty minutes.
Galucki scored the final KSU goal mid way thru the third making it 6-1, but it was the former Owl, Kacer, who rounded out the tallies, scoring on the power play.
Kacer performed well against his old school’s new team generating breakaways and odd man rushes, including a two-on-none chance late in the second period.
Georgia travels to Knoxville, TN to take on Tennessee this Friday night, and to Louisville, KY to play Louisville University on Saturday.

September 22, 2011 -
The Georgia Ice Dogs will open up the 2011-12 season Friday night with a game against in-state rival Kennesaw State.
While the Ice Dogs are confident in their abilities, they know that this weekend’s game against the Owls will be no cakewalk. This is the first year that the Owls have fielded a team in Division 3 since the team won the National Championship in 2007.
After that, the Owls moved to Division II. With a program growing in popularity and numbers, Kennesaw State will field a Division 2 and Division 3 team for the 2011-12 season with expectations similar to 2006-07.
The Dogs are looking for that ever so important win in their season opener that could generate momentum for the 2011-12 season. Georgia also has Peter Kacer, who has played with Kennesaw’s Division 2 team in the past and since transferred to Georgia during the second semester of last season.
Kacer had a fantastic half-season with the Dogs, scoring 20 points in 10 games and generating a buzz among the conference. Kacer was picked as a player to watch in a pre-season coaches poll, along with teammates Cam Navis, Bryan Swegman, and goalie Vince DiCarlo.
Kacer is likely to be at top form against his old school.
The Dogs have an excellent netminder in DiCarlo, who will be starting on Friday night. Coach Hoos lauded the returning junior’s abilities, and knows that his “fantastic goaltending” will play a huge factor in earning an important first win.
The puck drops at 9:30 p.m. at the Duluth Ice Forum, in Duluth, Ga.
Tickets will be sold at the door and will be $5.

September 21, 2011 - Head Coach John Hoos has released the 2011-12 Ice Dogs Roster as training camp and tryouts have wrapped. The South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference has also named four Ice Dogs to the 2011-12 season watchlist.
Peter Kacer and Vince DiCarlo headline the watchlist for the Ice Dogs. Forward Cam Navis and defensman Ryan Terrana also make the list for the Dogs and look to contribute heavily this season.
Kacer had 20 points in 10 games for the Ice Dogs in the second semester after transfering from Kennesaw State. He helped Georgia to a third-place finish in the 2011 SECHC Tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. Kacer also made headlines during the off season for setting a record at the skills challenge hosted by the Gwinnett Gladiators.
Vince DiCarlo played over 1100 minutes for the Ice Dogs last season, recording a 4.48 Goals Against Average. He also earned 3rd team All-SECHC honors.
Last season, Cam Navis was fifth on the team in points (15) last season in 25 games played and Terrana anchored the blueline for Coach Hoos.
Seniors Matt McClure and Brian Nahodyl also return for the Ice Dogs this season along with juniors Pete Virk and goaltender Paul Connors.

April 2, 2011 - The Ice Dogs might have been clipped by Kennesaw State in the overall score (3-2) in Friday's skill challenge at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, but it was Georgia's Peter Kacer's record setting performance that stole the show. In front of the majority of the 6,256 fans in attendance of the ECHL Gladiators vs. Greenville game, Kacer completed the one-lap speed course in 15.81 seconds, a new all time record for skill challenge participants in the eight year history of the arena.
Senior Matt McClure and Kacer both won their respective races against KSU players, but neither McClure, Kacer, nor freshman Cam Navis could find the net in the shootout competition, while two of the three KSU shooters scored despite outstretched efforts from Georgia's Paul Connors in the nets. One final tally from KSU in the sudden death round proved to be the winner. "Speed always wins in games," Kacer commented after the contest.
Considered a great PR event for the Ice Dogs, many barking Dawg fans could be heard in the stands as the Georgia players were introduced, and the Ice Dogs are hoping to see one or more of their games in Gwinnett Arena next season.
March 28, 2011 - Friday night, four Georgia Ice Dogs will participate in a skills competition against players from Kennesaw State University at the Gwinnett Center Arena. The skills competition will take place during the intermission of the Gwinnett Gladiators game. The Gladiator's game starts at 7pm. Discount tickets
February 27, 2011 - The Georgia Ice Dogs rebounded Sunday with a solid performance in net by Paul Connors to defeat Alabama 7-4 and take home 3rd place from the 2011 SECHC Tournament Cup. Connors stopped 51 of 55 Frozen Tide shots and Peter Kacer picked up his second hat trick of the tournament to help Georgia come away victorious. The "Frozen Tide" finished the regular season ranked 3rd in the ACHA D3 South national ranking prior to the playoff for the SEC crown, while Georgia failed to crack the top ten. The victory for Georgia out shined the loss to Bama earlier in the season that took place in the same building as part of the Clash in Columbus. Georgia goalie Paul Connors received the player of the match as he recorded 50 saves to shut down the Bama offense - the tide was only able to get two pucks past Connors in the first 52 minutes of the game. Only two late power play goals kept the score respectable. Sophomore transfer sensation Peter Kacer tallied his second hat-trick of the SEC playoffs, and added a dazzling assist with a highlight show spin-o-rama and pass to line mate Cam Navis.
Just 2:19 into the game first year junior Jard Reeves notched the second goal of his career at Georgia to lead off the scoring on a pass from junior Steve "Salty" Salvatierra. The goal inspired the Dawgs leading to a four-goal Georgia first period. Senior Lee Bosma notched the final goal of his illustrious career on a pass from transfer junior Brian Swegman to put Georgia up 2-0. Alabama's Himmelman cut the lead to 2-1 just two minutes later, but the show had just begun for Georgia. With 6:39 remaining in the period Chris Bastecki picked a Kacer pass out of mid-air near the Bama blue line sprinting past the Tide defense and fired a wrist shot past Krochaus to put Georgia up 3-1. Two minutes later Chris Heidkamp finished off an Alabama power play to bring the score to 3-2. Less than a minute later Kacer took a Bastecki pass up the left wing and as he was cut off by a Bama defensman he pirouetted a 360 degree spin feeding a backhand pass to Navis that left him a one-touch shot into the open net.
The second period showed only one goal. Kacer finished off a Michael Tinetti to Matt Ritchie feed to put Georgia up 5-2.
Early in the third Navis returned the favor on a pass to Kacer that he deposited into the Bama net to put Georgia up 6-2. Kacer then netted his third in a row for the natural hat-trick when he rifled a power play one-time slap shot on a second assist from Matt Ritchie's feed across the blue line cementing the Ice Dawgs victory. Bama managed two late period power play goals, one on a 5-on-3 advantage, to bring the final score to 7-4.
"This was quite possibly the best game we played all season," commented an elated Paul Connors after receiving his player of the game award. An unusual start to the game with several players missing from the Georgia line-up didn't phase the Dogs as fresh legs seemed to drive the early run for UGA. An unusual lineup hit the ice in the third period as well minus Lee Bosma which landed senior Matt McClure on defense.
Five Ice Dawgs played their final game at UGA: Lee Bosma, Michael Gabelman, Eric Patel, Matt Ritchie, and first year player Bill Jankowski all will graduate this spring and will be missed by the Dawgs next year.
Georgia finishes 12-12-1 on the season finding some bright stars as they look ahead to the 2011-12 season.
February 26, 2011 - John Hoos has several accomplishments as the coach of the Ice Dogs. He has made his mark in other areas of the game, from helping to start several tournaments, to the idea of SEC hockey. Commissioner Sarge Day of the SECHC made sure Hoos would be honored for that, with the John Hoos Coach of the Year Award. This year, the award was given to Mike Quenneville (right) of Alabama, who finished his frist season as head coach.
As Georgia's head coach, Hoos has led the Ice Dogs to 11 winning seasons and 7 national tournament appearances. In 2004, he led Georgia all the way to the National Championship game. Georgia brought home it’s first ever hockey championship with Hoos behind the bench winning the 2000
Thrasher Cup at the Memorial Health Hockey Classic in Savannah, GA, and has won the tournament 4 times since. As an administrator of the game, Coach Hoos has secured high profile events such as College Hockey Night in the Philips Arena, the Omni, and the new Gwinnett Center Arena in conjunction with the Atlanta Thrashers, Atlanta Knights, and Gwinnett Gladiators. Hoos was integral in the formation of the annual Savannah Hockey Classic, the annual Georgia/Florida hockey game played in Jacksonville, FL, and this season’s first ever College Hockey Clash in Columbus, GA.
Perhaps Hoos' biggest accomplishment as an advocate of the game of hockey, especially in the South, has come in recent years. Coach Hoos had the initial idea behind SEC hockey. After teaming up with Kenny 'Sarge' Day, the duo have helped put together the 11-team organization known as the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference. Hoos is the lead organizer of the conference and serves as Division Coordinator.
February 26, 2011 - The Ice Dogs run at a SECHC Tournament Championship came to an end in the semi-finals for the second straight season. Georgia fell to the No. 1 overall seed, Arkansas, 9-3. Pete Virk, who had two goals, tied the game at 1 midway throuh the 1st, but then it was all Arkanas. Georgia plays Alabama tomorrow for 3rd place at 1 p.m. Bracket
February 25, 2011 - The Georgia Ice Dogs defeated South Carolina 8-3 Friday night in Cumming, Ga to advance to the semi-finals of the 2011 SECHC Tournament Cup. Peter Kacer picked up a hat trick. Goalies Vince DiCarlo and Paul Connors split time, stopping 24 of 27 shots. Georgia will face defending champion Arkansas tomorrow night. Bracket
February 7, 2011 - With post-season spots on the line, the Georgia Ice Dawgs came up with two big wins this weekend. Sophomore transfer Peter Kacer had a hat-trick in both games to lead the Dogs' scoring attack. Friday night the Dogs bullied the Tennessee Ice Vols to a 7-3 win behind Kacer's hat-trick and two goals from senior Michael Gabelman. With the win, Georgia takes third place from Tennessee in the final SECHC East standings. The Ice Dogs will play South Carolina in the first round of the SECHC Tournament on February 25. Time and Location to be announced.
On Saturday Georgia came up big against the Yellojackets from Ga. Tech for an exciting 5-4 win in overtime. Georgia dominated and was leading 4-2, until Tech sprung for two quick goals in the third period to tie the game. Kacer's third of the night was the game winner in OT. Bosma and Jankowski added goals for Georgia in the win.
January 30, 2011 - In one of the longest regular season games in Ice Dogs' history, Georgia fell to Clemson. After a scoreless overtime, 8 rounds of a shootout were needed to determine the winner. Georgia goaltender Vince Dicarlo stopped 6 out of 8 shooters giving his team a chance to win. But, the Bulldogs could only muster one goal in the shootout by rookie sophomore Chris Bastecki.
Georgia dominated much of the play throughout the game and out-shot Clemson 41-33. However, the Ice Dogs hit the posts six times and could only get two pucks past a solid Clemson goalie.
Sunday afternoon, the Dogs ran into top ranked Arkansas. Despite a relatively evenly played game on the ice and in the statistical column, the Razorbacks outscored Georgia 3-1 early on en route to a 7-1 win.
