History
The UGA Ice Hockey Team, dubbed the "Ice Dogs”, was established in 1987 by team founder Larry Hall and a group of students wanting to start a new tradition at the University of Georgia. The Ice Dogs now compete in the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference (SECHC) of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, and play under NCAA rules. Georgia faces-off against ten SEC opponents including Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU & South Carolina. Other southern rival opponents include cross-state rival Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, and many of the other 38 teams in the South region of ACHA Division III.
Georgia Ice Hockey has made great strides in the last decade. As one of the perennial top ACHA DIII hockey programs, UGA hockey has participated in ACHA post season tournament play in 8 of the last 11 seasons, including a trip to the national championship game in 2004 in Phoenix, AZ. The Ice Dogs are five-time winners of the coveted Thrasher Cup tournament held in Savannah, GA, won three season conference titles, one conference championship (2004) and played in five conference championship games, including the first ever SECHC championship game versus Tennessee in 2009.
The Ice Dogs home ice is the Atlanta Ice Forum in Duluth, GA, which is also home to the NHL Atlanta Thrashers and ECHL Gwinnett Gladiators. Georgia also hosts games in large arenas such as the Savannah, GA Civic Center, the Columbus, GA Civic Center, Philips Arena of Atlanta, among a growing list of other arenas around the South.
Players on the Ice Dogs team have received countless awards and accolades over the past twenty-three seasons, including 12 tournament MVP’s, 21 all-tournament team awards, 19 Academic All-Americans (started in 2006), 4 All-Regional team members, and 2 All-American team members (started in 2007). Most recently, four members of the 2009-10 Ice Dogs team were selected to the first ever ACHA DIII national all-star weekend held in Philadelphia, PA in the spring of 2010 – Connor Kelly, Michael Gabelman, Vince DiCarlo, and Lee Bosma *(dnp due to injury). Coach Hoos was also selected as an assistant coach for the South region select team.
As a leader in the growth of collegiate hockey in the South, University of Georgia continues to put forth competitive hockey teams while now boasting as one of the premier academic institutions in the country, and some of the most difficult admissions standards in the region. Excellence in the classroom is emphasized in concert with excellence on the ice.
