The Georgia Ice Dogs extended their win streak to 5-games with victories over Tennessee and Florida State this weekend at the IceForum in Duluth, GA.
UGA 8 Tennessee 4
Georgia dominated the Tennessee Ice Vols on Friday night as the Dogs played pack-like defense in front of DiCarlo in the net and skated to a 6-1 lead following two periods of play. Freshman Kevin Smith played well in goal in the third period allowing only late power play goals in final minutes of the contest. The Georgia win gave a season sweep of Tennessee for the second season in a row and moved the Ice Dogs into 3rd place in the SEC Hockey East division behind South Carolina and Florida. Cam Navis netted the first two goals of the game, while Peter Kacer and Kyle Kidwell tallied twice each as well. Klye Blankenship and Chris Ritchie rounded out the Georgia scoring.
UGA 3 Florida State 2 (OT)
The Ice Dogs improved to 7-4 in exciting fashion defeating the visiting Florida State Seminoles 3-2 on a David Bakin to Peter Kacer goal in sudden death overtime. Georgia played uninspired during the opening twenty minutes despite Navis opening the Georgia scoring again just three minutes into the game. After allowing FSU to take a 2-1 lead mid-way thru the 2nd period, Georgia’s Stephen Bray tied the game at 2 with a power play goal. Teams exchanged scoring opportunities during the third period with Georgia leading the attacks and FSU’s Wladyta turning away multiple Ice Dog offensive opportunities. As the game moved to OT, Georgia again controlled the play, and with 1:29 left in the 5 minute OT Kyle Blankenship fed a leading pass to Bakin who rushed up the ice and delivered a pass across the goal crease for Kacer to deposit into the net for the win.
