The Georgia Ice Dogs in their first action of 2014 defeated the Auburn Tigers by a 10-4 final score in front of a packed crowd at the IceForum in Duluth, GA. Georgia scored early and often and took a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. By the end of the second period it was 7-1, and after leading 10-2 in the third period some sloppy defense allowed Auburn two late goals. Sophomore goalie Kevin Smith was stellar in his first start of the season after recovering from illness and surgery in October, turning away 27 of the first 29 shots from Auburn. The Dawgs offense was injected by goals from newcomers Eric Mauge and Ryan Rogowski, and assists from new additions Dixon Babb and Kyle Kidwell. Georgia forwards Stephen Bray, Micheal Falkenstein, Austin Shin, and J.A. Wutshcel each netted goals for UGA, while Peter Kacer notched a hat-trick plus one to lead the Georgia scoring.
Next up for the Ice Dogs is SEC rival Florida Gators at the Savannah Civic Center this Friday night. If you can’t make the game, follow the game with live updates via twitter @UGAhockey.
