Fresh off of their first win of 2014 over SEC rival Auburn, the Georgia Ice Dogs travel to the Savannah Civic Center this weekend to take on rivals Florida and Georgia Tech in the 16th annual Savannah Hockey Classic. see story @ http://goo.gl/nc5PBG Georgia faces SEC rival Florida Gators on Friday night, and in-state rival Ga Tech on Saturday night. Crowds are expected to exceed 5,500 again each night in the hockey frenzied atmosphere that engulfs Savannah, GA each January. “It’s an unbelievable place to play,” Georgia co-captain Nick Carlotto expressed about playing in the Savannah Civic Center. “We love playing with a loud Georgia crowd behind us. It is really motivating.” The Bulldog-heavy fanbase in Savannah will be coming out to see if Georgia can capture the “Thrasher Cup” trophy again, and to see crowd favorites co-captain Peter Kacer and Shelby Saponari lace up the skates again. Kacer is one of the nation’s leading goal scorers while Saponari is the only active female athlete on an SEC hockey roster. But that doesn’t keep her from competing and being an impact player – Saponari had the “hit of the tournament” in Savannah last year, sending a Yellowjacket forward head over heels to the roar of the Georgia faithful with an upending mid-ice hip check. The Dawgs will need plenty of hard play from the likes of Kacer and Saponari and others as they continue to gel with new players this season. “We have alot of new guys,” co-captain Stephen Bray explained. “I feel like we are really starting to play well together.” Georgia faces a veteran team in the tournament favorite Florida Gators on Friday night in Savannah, and will have to play top hockey against a talented Yellojacket team from Tech on Saturday night.
