The last time the UGA Ice Dawgs found themselves on the ice at the Classic Center, they were battling in overtime with a talented Florida State team. Their victory over the Noles added to their 6-2 season record, and a week later on Friday night, they skated onto the ice, looking for their seventh straight win against the University of South Carolina, a team at the tail end of a long road trip.
The exhaustion failed to show as USC shut down UGA’s momentum from the week before, heading back to Columbia with a 5-0 victory under their belts. South Carolina overpowered UGA from the beginning, putting up a strong defensive front and an aggressive, scoring offense. Scoreless till the middle of the first period, UGA was unable to control Alec Gerred in his first goal of the night, assisted by Mike Genau.
South Carolina would not strike again until the 2nd period, with another dominant Gerred goal, helped by his teammates, Geordie Lukas and Kyle Ware. Still confidently holding off UGA, South Carolina showed no signs of letting up. A pass from Ian Donnahoo to Billy Kuriger would set up the third Gerred goal, making the score 3-0.
The built up frustration broke in the third period, with an overwhelming amount of time in the penalty box for both teams. South Carolina’s Mike Foster was not off the ice long enough for UGA, however, as he extended the USC lead with an assist from Josh Carey despite his two penalties. Amidst a slew of UGA penalties, Derek Maggs took advantage of a power play near the end of the 3rd period to finalize the score at 5-0.
On Sunday, Georgia drove to South Carolina in hopes of evening the series. The Ice Dawgs, however, fell to the Gamecocks 6-1. They will have to wait till October 30th, when they will face the Clemson Tigers, for their next chance on the ice. Next for South Carolina will be on the 31st, during their 7-game home stand, against the University of Tennessee.
