Senior Day Preview
By: Tyler Farmer
For the Ice Dawg seniors, this weekend’s upcoming senior day festivities will be memorable. The weekend slate against South Florida and Georgia Tech will showcase hockey at its roots. While home games are normally played at Akins Ford Arena in the Classic Center, these contests will be played outside at the Foundry Pavilion. While still close in proximity to the Classic Center, the outdoor games create a unique atmosphere for the players and fans alike.
In the season series, Georgia has beaten Georgia Tech twice, and the teams have tied once. The Ice Dawgs have yet to play South Florida this season.
In terms of postseason play, winning both games would go a long way towards punching our ticket to nationals. The Ice Dawgs are #2 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) South Region poll and 9th overall. With USF and Georgia Tech ranked 3rd and 9th in the South Region, respectively, postseason berths may be on the line at the Foundry. The significance here is that the top two teams in each region (North, South, Pacific, Atlantic) receive automatic bids to nationals. Otherwise, Georgia would have to win regionals to quality. After this weekend, Georgia wraps up the regular season on the road at Kentucky before the SEC Tournament.
