Georgia Finishes Season 23-3; Wins SECHC Title

The University of Georgia Hockey team concluded its season last weekend with back-to-back wins against Tampa University. The No. 4 ranked Ice Dawgs defeated No. 3 Tampa 7-4 on Friday night and 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

Chris Santa Maria and Carter Penzien led the way Friday night with both players earning hat tricks. Chris Santa Maria scored two goals in the first and added his final goal in the final period. Penzien scored two in the second period before finishing off his hat trick with one more goal in the third. Kyle Harris also found the net in the first period.

Austin Krusko powered the Ice Dawgs win on Saturday with a goal in the second period and another goal in the third. Jackson Katz started off the Ice Dawgs scoring in the first period. Kyle Harris scored his second goal on the weekend with a goal in the second period.

The weekend sweep pushed the Ice Dawgs final season record to 23-3. The team will not compete in this year’s regional or national tournament.

“The Important thing we need to remember, our players are students first, athletes second,” assistant coach John Camp said. “They play for the love of the game and to represent UGA. They succeeded on numerous levels this season. Unfortunately, as it happens in life, not everything works in your favor. This year, we came out of Nashville as SECHC champions. There will not be any what if’s, rather the team proved who they are, and we will look forward to next season.”

The Ice Dawgs finished ranked No. 3 in the south region in the final ACHA Men’s DIII rankings of the season.
