For the ninth time in history the Ice Dawgs reigned champions of the Thrasher Cup in the EnMarket Savannah Hockey Classic recording two wins throughout the weekend. Georgia faced off against Florida on Friday, January 17th routing the Gators 6-2 backed by Freshman Owen Spreadbury in goal. The Ice Dawgs returned to the ice on Saturday to skate against in-state rival, Georgia Tech, defeating the Yellow Jackets 4-3.
The Ice Dawgs improved to 12-7-2 in overall ACHA records and 11-5-0 in SEC.
Georgia and Florida tied 1-1 going into the first intermission the single goal scored on a power play by Graduate Student Chris Keresztes. The main bulk of action occurred in the second period where the Ice Dawgs scored three unanswered goals from Freshman Alex Mahr, Senior Jack Ryan, and Keresztez with his second goal of the night.
Taking a 4-1 lead into the third period, the Ice Dawgs continued their offensive attack with two more goals from Sophomore Jacob Salaski and Sophomore Jackson Katz. Spreadbury registered 22 saves on 24 shots on goal.
Georgia carried the momentum from their win over Florida into their game against Georgia Tech to fight back from a 2-1 deficit and force the game into a shootout. Ryan scored in the first to keep the Ice Dawgs in the game followed by two goals in the second period from Senior Aaron Phillips and Katz to tie the game at 3-3. After two periods of overtime, four-on-four and three-on-three, the result of the game fell to a three-man shootout.
Junior Brady Mulligan backed Georgia in goal and recorded 17 saves on 20 shots on goal through three periods and double overtime. Mulligan blocked all three Yellow Jacket shots during the shootout and Ryan scored the only goal in the shootout to win the game for the Ice Dawgs.
The Ice Dawgs travel to Clemson and South Carolina this weekend and are set to play the Tigers at 10pm on Friday and face the Gamecocks at 8pm on Saturday.
